When we are going through something difficult, imagining the good that may come from it can be challenging. This is particularly true when an unexpected event alters the present, influences our future, and even our connection to the past. Surprisingly, it's the result of these times when we often find our greatest gifts.

That's how it turned out for this family, whose horse suffered neurological damage after an illness. While they may not have understood when it was happening, the reason would eventually reveal itself.

The heartwarming story, shared on July 21, is one of hope and inspiration for anyone facing difficulties.

When life doesn't go as planned, we often question why. Sierra Dawn (@ sierra_dawn_ ) explains that when her beautiful horse, Tommygun, fell ill at three years old with West Nile virus, it wasn't clear if he would make it. This devastating diagnosis was even more challenging to process, given he shared the same mother and a connection to her beloved horse, Tomahawk. After two weeks of fighting for his life, he never gave up and finally came home. Sadly, he wasn't the same horse, and it was clear he had suffered neurological damage from the virus. While the dream of him being a barrel racer like his brother was gone, she loved him for who he was, and that's the kindest horse she'd ever met. Now that she has children, this gentle boy can teach their daughter, Della Dawn, how to ride . This calm sweetheart can also provide hippotherapy for their son, Vader, who was recently diagnosed with Joubert syndrome, a disorder that affects the cerebellum, controlling balance and coordination. Just watching the love Vader has for him and the safety he feels on his back shows how wonderful he is. So, while he might not be a barrel racer, his purpose proved even more special.

West Nile Virus and Its Effects on Horses

West Nile Virus (WNV) is a disease transmitted by mosquitoes that can affect humans and horses. According to UC Davis Veterinary Medicine, horses infected with WNV may show signs such as fever, stumbling, weakness, muscle twitching, seizures, drooping lips, lip smacking, head drooping, grinding teeth, and abnormal sensitivity to touch or sound. While horses with mild cases may fully recover, those with more severe cases can experience long-term side effects, including gait and behavior abnormalities.

This inspiring story touched people. Viewer @kaylapruiksma responded, "We always think we are training horses, but really, they teach us about life. Nothing as special as the bond horses allow us to have with them. This is so beautiful." That it is. Viewer @laura.stockland remarked, "They. Are. Pure. Magic." Without a doubt!

Horses have a unique ability to help humans learn and heal, just like Tommygun, who will fulfill the role he was meant for alongside his loving family.
