Summertime is officially coming to a close: school is starting up again, and it is cooling down, even if it doesn't always feel like it. People are trying their best to get the last of their summer fun in while they still can!

On Monday, August 5th, one Beagle went on one of his last beach trips of the summer, and he finally felt ready to get in the water. Watching him get over his anxiety just in the nick of time is kind of amazing:

Copper the Beagle doesn't usually do this, so it was hilarious for them to see. He really looked like he was going to swim out to sea!

Copper is known for being a little bit of an anxious boy. He's just wary of things he doesn't know, which a trait that a lot of Beagles share. He's still a puppy, too, which certainly doesn't help. However, this summer, he's been getting some more exposure to the water than he usually does. First, it was a boat ride, then a calm swim, and now this!

Follow up videos have shown that he really does love the beach now, and he's lucky: he'll probably have some more time to enjoy it before it's time to bundle up for wintertime.

Beagles and Water Don't Always Mix Well

Copper seems to have no problem in the water at all, but the same can't be said for all Beagles. While a lot of them enjoy being by the water because they enjoy the sounds and smells associated with it, they don't necessarily being in the water. Beagles have shorter legs that make swimming a little more difficult, and their long ears can sometimes mean they're predisposed to ear infections.

Beagles are scent hounds: they like to be able to smell everything and really focus their energy on that. When they're swimming, they're more concerned with staying afloat, and things in the water can be harder to smell. That's why bigger dogs who aren't as focused on smelling, like Golden or Labrador Retrievers, are better for retrieving waterfowl or bringing with you to the beach for the day.

That doesn't mean that Beagles and water can't get along well: they totally can. You just need to expose them to it when they're puppies and do so in small doses: start with baths and work your way up. If you do that, your pup can be a regular mer-man, just like Copper!
