Wild Florida Gator Park shared the exciting news that a rare albino baby alligator was born after a 60-day incubation period. The baby, yet unnamed, was born to parents Snowflake and Blizzard and the baby will make his debut after maturing for a month.
This is the third successful hatching the park has had.
WTSP reports, " Snowflake and Blizzard are examples as they have been at the park for seven years with their last hatching in the summer of 2022.
“We are most proud of the parents, Snowflake and Blizzard, who continue to beat the odds and be a one-of-a-kind experience for guests," said staff member Andrew Ayala in a news release.
Wild Florida is the only attraction in the world with a successful albino alligator breeding program, according to the release.
WildFloridaAirBoats explains, "In May 2017, Wild Florida acquired Blizzard and Snowflake who became the first pair of breeding albino alligators in Central Florida and one of the few places in the world where visitors can see these rare animals. Originally from the St. Augustine Alligator Farm, these two give visitors from around the world a unique opportunity to not only learn more about alligators but also the special care that goes into housing an albino species."
Due to the lack of melanin this species produces, their skin is completely white and sensitive to the sunlight, so our team built a state-of-the-art, climate-controlled exhibit with plenty of shade and a heating lamp to keep them comfortable in their new home.
Both traits can have animals to have a pale appearance, but leucism is a partial loss of pigmentation and often results in splotchy or patchy coloration where the animal has normal colored eyes, and albinism affects the body’s production of the pigment melanin and often means an animal will have red or pink eyes.
Albino alligators are extremely rare . It is estimated that there are only about 100 to 200 albino alligators in the world. These alligators have a low survival rate in the wild, because their sensitivity to sunlight and their inability to camouflage, making them more vulnerable to predators.
When a baby alligator born with leucism at Gatorland last year they explained that due to how rare this little lady is, they are being careful with her and her brothers safety and security. The park explains, "We plan to have them on display early next year so guests can see them, learn about them, and fall in love with them like we have. For now, however, we continue to keep them safe where we can closely monitor their health and growth."
