Apparently Dogs Have 'Contentment Ceremonies' After Eating and It's Just Too Cute

Eating is so fun. Eating helps us feel satisfied, and if we're eating something really good, we may even want to do a little dance. It's natural. There's nothing wrong with being happy and satisfied at the end of a meal. That's the goal!

So, it's no surprise to find out that dogs also love to eat, and when they're done, they also have a special little ritual that they do. If you want to know if your dog also does this after eating, just watch this video. Odds are, your dog is doing it more than you realize!

I'm happy that @digitdax was able to put a name to this thing. My dogs all do it all the time - I thought they were just itchy or something! This is crazy.

Digit and Pip are two of the sweetest sisters ever, and they're very happy girls. Their parents say they partake in these contentment ceremonies frequently, and they love it. Digit and Pip are just very content girls, and nothing makes their parents happier.

After every meal, the dogs will go over to their beds or another comfy area, flop onto their backs, and roll around. Typically, a contentment ceremony ends with a nice nap. There's nothing better than napping when you're feeling a little too full! All dogs are different, though, and not every dog will do it - but there are a few things to look for.

How to Spot Dog Contentment Ceremonies

Doggy contentment ceremonies usually happen after they eat because they're stretching around, trying to make themselves more comfortable. Stretching helps reduce that bloated, cramping feeling you get if you eat too much/too quickly. While dogs will usually stretch in the "downward dog" pose after waking up, rolling around belly-up is the best for after they eat.

If your dog is showing off in a contentment ceremony, you'll see them:

    1. Head to their favorite spot.
    2. Immediately flip onto their back to start rolling around.
    3. Making weird snorting noises, which is just a side effect of being upside down.
    4. Kicking things out of the way so they can have some more space.

While contentment ceremonies usually happen after a meal, they will also happen in some other circumstances, like when you first get in bed after a long day. Don't be alarmed: they're just getting comfy!

Don't be confused between a "contentment ceremony" and a desire to spread their scent, though. If your pup is rolling around on the ground outside or in your freshly cleaned bed, that's because they want to get their scent all over it. Luckily, though, those things are just as cute!
