Dachshund's Amazement When Pregnant Mom's Baby Kicks Is Impossible to Resist

The first time you feel a baby kick, whether it's your baby or not, is crazy. As a child, it feels like the craziest thing in the world, and as a mother, it must feel super validating: proof that there's actually a baby in there!

As it turns out, the magic is also there for our furry friends. On Sunday, June 18th, he felt his new baby sister kick for the first time while he was snuggling with his mom. At first, he was unsure, but he warmed right up:

Wilbur and Palmer are going to be the best big brother and big sister in the world. I'm sure they can't wait to meet their less furry sister soon!

According to Wilbur and Palmer's mom, she's due any day, which means that the baby that just kicked Wilbur in the head has fully formed legs and feet. Babies kicking toward the end of a pregnancy are much stronger than they are when they first start!

To be kicked by something you can't see, especially when you don't have a real concept of human pregnancy, must be a little bit wild. At first, he startles; how could he not? But after he realizes that it came from his mom, the excitement in his eyes is just so sweet. It's one of those things that their mom will look back on one day and cry like a baby (no pun intended).

    Do Dogs Understand Pregnancy?

A common thing that happens when people first get pregnant, they say, is that their dog starts acting weird. They claim their pups start staying glued to their sides, sniffing around them, and they lay their heads down on their stomachs. Over the years, it's led people to believe that dogs can sense pregnancy.

Scientifically speaking, there is no concrete evidence that dogs can sense pregnancy. They may be able to detect side effects, like changes in certain odors or alterations to your everyday routine, but they don't necessarily understand that a baby is what's causing that. Additionally, things like kicks and punches from the baby can draw them to your belly.

As a good rule of thumb, dogs don't really understand pregnancy or that there is a baby until the baby is there. Look at little Wilbur's amazement: he doesn't understand how mom is kicking him from her stomach. I mean, her hands are way too busy giving him pets! But once that baby comes (which, for her sake, we all hope is soon!), he'll be the best big brother ever!
