Great Pyrenees Sniffs Out Eggs on the Farm and Gets His Favorite Reward

Most farms aren't complete without at least a couple chickens. Eggs are expensive, and having eggs you produce yourself is just better. You know the chickens are kept well, and you know the eggs will be good.

Another thing most sizable farms have is at least one dog, and that dog can serve a lot of different purposes, depending on their breed. On September 4th, one farmer and dog mom took to TikTok to share her Great Pyrenees performing one of his many jobs as the Resident Egg Finder:

Bri Benton is so lucky that Thor is there to sniff out the eggs for her. Otherwise, who knows how many she'd lose?!

Thor is one of many animals on this farm: his mom breeds and trains herding Border Collies. She also has several livestock guardians dogs and even a couple of birds of her own! In addition to all of that, she's a dog trainer, so there are tons of dogs coming and going - plus dozens of farm animals. It's busy around those parts!

With so many dogs and animals coming and going, livestock guardian dogs are more important than ever. Without them, any animal could sneak onto the farm, and they'd eat a lot more than just the eggs. However, when he's not busy protecting the farm from predators, Thor can typically be found following mom around, sniffing around for eggs and pointing them out like a good boy. Sometimes, if he's lucky, she even lets him keep one!

Are Raw Eggs Safe For Dogs?

There will usually be two camps of people when it comes to feeding dogs just about anything: anxious people who approach everything with extreme caution (that's me) and people who say, "they'd be eating worse in the wild!" Raw eggs are often at the forefront of these conversations. Some say they're great, while others anxiously avoid.

Raw eggs are technically not toxic and can be fed to dogs, but there are some risks. Raw eggs can carry salmonella and other harmful bacteria or parasites. Cooking the eggs is what eliminates that possibility. If you do decide you have to feed your dog raw eggs, it's best to feed them unwashed eggs fresh from a farm. The hope is that the protective coating deposited onto the egg as it's laid keeps additional bacteria out of the egg, though there could still be some within.

If your dog eats a raw egg, either on purpose or by accident, just keep an eye on them for any signs of food poisoning or infection. Never feed them an egg that appears cracked, discolored, or deformed, or an egg that looks or smells like it's gone bad. It's always better to be safe!
