Paradise Valley Public Works Department is preparing for the start of monsoon season June 15.

There are a lot of measures taken by the town to help reduce impacts to roadways and mitigate flooding, according to the Town Manager’s Weekly Update. Crews will be trimming trees to thin out canopies, which limits the weight carried by trees to better withstand wind gusts. Contactors are clearing out clogged culverts, which carries water under roadways. Additionally, town road flooded signage, barricades and equipment is prepared and staged for potential emergency calls.

Like 2023, the National Weather Service predicts Arizona to see below normal in rain amounts with above average temperatures, the weekly newsletter stated. Not only can flooding be an issue during the season, but high wind gusts and microbursts can be devastating to properties, utilities and roadways.

Some tips for residents during monsoon storms are:

    • Trim large trees
    • Clear out all culverts and storm drains on your property
    • Avoid water crossings in roadways if possible
    • Never drive around road closed signs
    • Tie down anything on your property that may become airborne in high wind gusts
