Accidental shooting in Parsons leaves one in critical condition

PARSONS, Kan. (KOAM) - An accidental shooting early morning on July 25, 2024 has left one man in critical condition and another in police custody. The incident occurred at Prairie West Apartments on the 3600 block of Chess Avenue.

According to authorities, Parsons police received a report of a possible shooting at the apartment complex. Officer Tyler White, responding to the call, noticed a suspicious vehicle speeding toward Labette Health. The vehicle, driven by 26-year-old Kenyon L. Best, arrived at the emergency room, where Best informed medical staff that he had accidentally shot the victim. The injured man was immediately rushed into the ER for treatment.

Patrol Lieutenant Kyle Wiford provided further details on the incident, stating, "Officers retrieved a 9mm handgun and other evidence. Based on the evidence and interviews along with witnesses, it appears that Best may have accidentally discharged a pistol at Prairie West Apartments, and the victim, who was nearby, was struck by the bullet."

Authorities identified the victim and the shooter as acquaintances who had been together earlier in the night at Best's residence. It was also determined that the 24-year-old victim is a resident of Columbus, KS.

Under Kansas law, causing serious injury through the reckless discharge of a firearm is classified as aggravated assault, a felony. Officers also found evidence suggesting Best had been drinking, leading to an additional misdemeanor charge of possession of a firearm while intoxicated.

Best was arrested at Labette Health and transported to the Parsons Police Lock-Up facility for booking on the two charges.

The victim, who was in critical but stable condition, was initially treated at Labette Health Emergency Room before being life-flighted to Freeman Hospital.

Detective Lieutenant Sherri McGuire stated, "This appears to be an isolated accidental shooting at the present time. This is an unfortunate and serious incident that leaves a victim in the hospital and a suspect in jail. Alcohol or other substances that can impair judgment should never be mixed with firearms."
