A Florida man who was suspected of killing a family of four has reportedly admitted that the bodies were burned in a fire pit at his property in Hudson.
On Monday (June 17), court documents were released after deputies in Pasco County arrested 25-year-old Rory John Graeme Atwood . According to the Pasco County Sheriff’s Office, officials have been searching for the missing family of four, who were last seen at Atwood’s home on Wednesday, June 12. The victims include Rain Mancini , 26; Phillip Zilliot II , 25; Karma Zilliot , 6, and Phillip Zilliot III , 5.
According to the new court documents released, Atwood was arrested on June 15 for first-degree homicide after deputies found remains in his fire pit. On Thursday, June 13, deputies received a call for a welfare check at the family’s home, owned by Atwood. Upon arrival, they spoke with him and searched the property, but did not find anything suspicious.
However, Pasco County Sheriff’s Office Sheriff Chris Nocco reported that a friend of the suspect received a call from him around 2 in the morning, claiming he sounded “really upset and frantic” and that he told him he “shot somebody.” An affidavit reports that Atwood video-called his friend and initially claimed he needed help burning trash. However, during the video phone call, the friend noticed a puddle of blood and could see adult and child bodies at the scene.
Detectives returned to Atwood’s property on Friday, June 14 and a Pasco County Sheriff’s Office cadaver dog removed “small skeletal remains” from a burn pit, including “long bone fragments” and “two apparent human vertebrae, all of which had apparent thermal damage to them.” A firearm was also retrieved from the pit, along with a discarded couch from the home’s living room.
Sheriff Nocco said, ”He gave us permission to go back on the property, we start doing a more extensive search, we have the human remain dogs, bloodhounds, aviation, deputies…because of this search we were able to find human remains.”
Court records further revealed that the Florida man suspected of killing the family of four evicted them on June 1 for failure to pay rent. On June 12, the family returned to collect their belongings and during the visit, there was an altercation involving a firearm and a knife.
Atwood reportedly admitted that he got into an argument with Mancini, who allegedly had a gun, and that Zilliot II attacked him with a knife. Atwood told police he disarmed the man, who punched him in the head. After a struggle over the gun, Atwood reportedly fired two shots into Zilliot’s head and claimed Mancini was shot “multiple times” in the head and torso.
Atwood reportedly did not reveal what happened to the children but speculated that they were killed by Zilliot II and Mancini. He further admitted to dragging the bodies out of the residence and into the fire pit, which had already been lit. As mentioned, he also tossed in the gun and blood-stained couch. The Florida man admitted to burning the two adult bodies and having knowledge that both juveniles of the family “were also burned in the same fire pit.” He remains in the Pasco County Jail.
