Checkpoint will take place at an undisclosed location within San Luis Obispo

    – The San Luis Obispo Police Department will hold a driving under the influence (DUI) checkpoint on Friday, Sept. 6, from 8 p.m. to 2 a.m. The checkpoint will take place at an undisclosed location within San Luis Obispo.

The DUI checkpoint location is determined based on data related to impaired driving crashes. The primary purpose of the checkpoint is to enhance public safety by removing suspected impaired drivers from the roads.

“Impaired drivers put others on the road at significant risk,” Sgt. Evan Stradley of the traffic unit said. “Any prevention measures that reduce the number of impaired drivers on our roads significantly improve traffic safety.”

The San Luis Obispo Police Department reminds the public that impaired driving is not limited to alcohol. Some prescription and over-the-counter medications can affect driving, and while medicinal and recreational marijuana are legal, driving under the influence of marijuana remains illegal. First-time DUI offenders face an average of $13,500 in fines and penalties, along with a suspended license.

This checkpoint is funded by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, in partnership with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
