Schorr Thing: Barbecued Meat Loaves a Winner
By all accounts, Marie Schorr didn’t have the easiest of lives: five boys to raise on a 12,000-acre property far removed from urban conveniences. Conveniences, things we take for granted, like electricity. The Canelo Hills Ranch made its own, as did many area ranches in the day. The nearest phone was 13 miles away in Elgin. Wood provided heat. And the rough-and-tumble landscape was a challenge for cowboys to negotiate. “Lots of snuffy cows,” said son Dr. Richard “Dick” Schorr, DVM. “We rode six days a week to find new-born calves.”
Nature’s Shams, Fakes and Dupes
Today’s human world is rife with all manner of scams. Hapless people are fooled into parting with their hard-earned money via fake charities. Unscrupulous types pose as someone they are not in order to extort money, power, sex or other such commodities. Truth be told, our species clearly has...

Old Soul
May was the one-year anniversary of that unfortunate time when I cut my hair very short. My reasoning was simple: I was going to let my hair finally go grey and by cutting my hair short I would hasten the process and then I would live happily ever after joining the ranks of my fellow grey hairs.

See No Evil
A couple of Mexican spotted owls close their eyes in dismay at their potential future in the Patagonia Mountains. These owls thrive in the forested canyon habitat of the Sky Islands, hunting rodents, bats, reptiles, birds and invertebrates. Because Mexican spotted owls do not breed every year and do not...
Primary Impact

To that end, we are hosting two candidate forums at the Tin Shed Theater in Patagonia, free and open to the public. We will also be recording these forums and posting them on our YouTube channel.
Sonoita-Elgin Cuisine Tourism Initiative Hits Rough Patch
Striking a decidedly conciliatory note, Santa Cruz County officials have acknowledged errors relating to a $300,000 Economic Development Agency grant aimed at capturing increased “cuisine tourism” spending in Sonoita-Elgin. At a May 28 meeting, attended by about 35 residents, Frank Dillon, County Community Development Director, reported that the...

Town Council Notes – June 2024
In Call to Public, Ralph Schmitt responded to Ron Ochoa’s “First Annual Patagonia Mountain Bike Charity Event,” proposed for May 25 and 26. He raised concerns about the lack of detail in the request for this event, including liability, safety, parking, insurance, camping, sanitation and other permitting. For the event planning group, Shelton Sherrill addressed some of these concerns, stating that his group’s primary interest was in working with community and the town for a successful event, a fun ride intending to comply with all ordinances of Town and County. Post-race events were to feature food, drinks and live music, with proceeds partially benefiting Patagonia Food Bank and Voices from the Border.
Group Works to Preserve Historic Prairie Gem
The San Rafael house and buildings in the San Rafael State Natural Area are in tough shape. The roof of the ranch house has been leaking. There is only one working bathroom, located in the basement. The roofs have blown off part of the barn and some of the older buildings. A fire two years ago burnt down the corrals.
