    North Carolina Man Arrested in Paterson Custody Dispute, Child Reunited with Mother

    PATERSON, NJ – A North Carolina man was arrested on June 7 for interference with custody, Passaic County Prosecutor Camelia Valdes, Paterson Police Department Officer-In-Charge Isa Abbassi, and United States Marshal Juan Mattos announced.

    According to a statement, on May 28, members of the Paterson Police Department were dispatched to the area of East 27th Street and 21st Ave on a report of a custody dispute. A Paterson resident reported that the father of her 10-month-old daughter had not returned the child to her on May 26, pursuant to their court-ordered visitation agreement. On June 5, after an investigation by the Paterson Police Department and the Passaic County Prosecutor’s Office, a warrant was issued for Anthony Smith’s arrest.

    On June 7, members of the United States Marshals Service apprehended Smith in North Carolina. The child was found in good health and was reunited with her mother. Smith is pending extradition to New Jersey.

    Smith could face up to 10 years in prison if found guilty.
