PATERSON, NJ - Thursday marked a momentous occasion as Paterson Public Schools gathered at Hinchliffe Stadium to celebrate the graduation of John F. Kennedy High School and International High School's Class of 2024. Superintendent of Schools Dr. Laurie Newell, alongside city dignitaries and board members, commended the graduates for their dedication and achievements over the past four years.
"This ceremony is a testament to your hard work and commitment to education," Newell said. "On behalf of everyone here today, congratulations. We are so proud of you."
The event was filled with mixed emotions as graduates reflected on their journeys and looked towards the future. Despite challenges posed by the pandemic and personal struggles, the Class of 2024 demonstrated resilience and perseverance, embodying the spirit of their schools.
Valedictorians from both schools delivered poignant speeches, sharing personal stories of growth and gratitude. They highlighted the support of their families, teachers, and peers, emphasizing the importance of community and perseverance in overcoming obstacles.
"Today as we celebrate our graduation, I reflect on our journey of the past 12 years and the achievements that have led us here," Bushra Khan, Valedictorian of John F. Kennedy High School said. "It’s a day we once thought distant but now cherish deeply. Despite challenges, we stand here proud, grateful for the support of our families, friends, and teachers. The road ahead won't be easy, but I'm confident in our ability to succeed and make a difference. Let's embrace this moment, knowing our best days lie ahead, guided by hope and faith."
In her address, Nydia Cos-Rivera, Valedictorian of International High School expressed proud gratitude to the Paterson administration, faculty, alumni, friends, family, and even the strawberries that fueled her speechwriting. Reflecting on the challenges overcome, she humorously recounted the unexpected twists of high school life, from virtual freshman year to unexpected friendships and memorable senior adventures. Despite personal hardships, she acknowledged the resilience of the Class of 2024 and celebrated their collective achievements.
"Today, as we graduate from International High School, we're not just saying goodbye; we're stepping into a new chapter," Cos-Rivera said. "Let's embrace it, because we, the Class of 2024, are ready to make our mark."
