PATERSON, NJ - The Paterson City Council has awarded an $8.6 million contract to Your Way Construction, Inc., based in Irvington, to undertake the much-anticipated River Street Reconstruction Project. The project, expected to last approximately 8.5 months, aims to revitalize one of Paterson's busiest thoroughfares, which is crucial for daily transit, community access, and local commerce.
River Street is a vital artery for thousands of Paterson residents, connecting them to public transportation, essential services, businesses, schools, and other daily necessities. The comprehensive reconstruction project seeks to address longstanding infrastructure concerns, ensuring improved safety and usability for all users.
The scope of the project includes extensive upgrades to road surfaces, sidewalks, and related infrastructure along River Street.
During the council meeting, several key points were discussed, including the coordination with utilities to ensure that no newly paved sections will be disrupted for future work.
Councilwoman-at-Large Dr. Lilisa Mimms highlighted the need for community involvement, noting the significant impact of the project on local residents and businesses.
"We should ensure that there is a dedicated project manager for the River Street reconstruction,” she said. “This will help prevent costly change orders and keep the project within scope. Given the project's significance, it's crucial to have someone specifically assigned to oversee it from start to finish."
Sixth Ward Councilman Al Abdelaziz suggested hiring a part-time construction official to oversee the project, ensuring it stays within scope and budget. The administration confirmed that a construction management contract would be presented at the next council meeting for approval.
The River Street project spans multiple wards, including the First, Third, and Fourth Wards. Council members expressed optimism about the project's potential to transform the area and improve the quality of life for residents.
"This has been a long time coming," Mimms said. "We've faced numerous challenges, but finally, we're moving forward. This project will significantly enhance our infrastructure and benefit the entire community."
The project is set to commence in August, with pre-construction meetings scheduled to ensure all stakeholders, including the fire department, police department, and community representatives, are informed and prepared for the upcoming changes.
"We need to get this done with River Street,” Fourth Ward Councilwoman Ruby Cotton said. “I don't believe the current funding is enough to complete the project, but we have to get started and move forward. It's important to address this now and make progress."
"River Street is one of the biggest projects we've undertaken,” Council President Alex Mendez said. “We must work collaboratively to ensure its success and longevity, benefiting the residents and businesses of Paterson for years to come.”
