Forging Our Future Shows Off Construction Progress of New Vandalia Athletic Building
Members of the Forging Our Future committee and Vandalia School Board got a look at the beginning progress made on the new athletic building that will house a new weight room, wrestling room and more for district athletes. Committee member Bob Culbertson led a tour of the progress on the building so far that has included gutting the building and beginning to layout where the various components of the building will be including the athletic offices, cardio room, golf simulator, locker room, weight room and wrestling room. Culbertson and Athletic Director Jason Clay then answered questions and Superintendent Dr. Jennifer Garrison spoke about some steps they’ve taken and will take in the future to get Vandalia student athletes involved. After the tour, Clay said they are certainly excited to see the progress being made.
Salem Grade School Board approves new teacher and support contracts
The Salem Grade School Board has approved new contracts with the teacher’s association and support staff. Superintendent Dr. Leslie Foppe says the new two year contract with the teacher’s association includes a 4.5 percent increase in pay each year plus an increased step on the salary scale. She didn’t feel comfortable entering a longer term contract due to dropping corporate income tax revenue and uncertainty over how much state aid the district will be receiving.

Unit 1 Addresses Handbook At Meeting
The Mulberry Grove Unit 1 Board of Education met Monday and took action regarding student handbook changes. Superintendent Casie Bowman and Junior High /High School Principal Adam Haston talked about some of them saying that they added prohibition of students cursing, bullying will also include fighting and or assault, making threats on internet sites or via cell phone messages to teachers or staff will also be prohibited. There has also been an update on the no-hats rule. That will also count for hoods as well. Students who have 10% or more of unexcused absences will not be participating in graduation.
Vandalia Park Board Meeting Held
July 18th is PROTECT SWIMMERS DAY! Vandalia Pool Manager Lisa Robbins announced at the July 11 Vandalia Park Board meeting that Vandalia Park District has received a grant for swimming lessons for 35 at risk children ages 3-5 years old. “In the nation, drowning is the leading cause of injury/death for children under the age of five.” Protect Swimmers 10 M is a government program to prevent 10 million children nationwide from drowning. The program offers kids and their parents coloring books, wrist bands, mini beach balls, and other safety related items to enhance awareness of the need for reducing the tragedy of water-related injuries/deaths.

Sarah Bush Lincoln is pleased to announce that Vandalia native Jennifer Garrison, Ed. D., is joining the SBL Health System and Health Center Board of Directors. City of Vandalia applying for grant funding for downtown
The City of Vandalia is applying to try and get grant funding for downtown. The grant the City of Vandalia is looking to get is the Rebuild Illinois Downtowns & Main Streets grant. The city had applied before back in late 2022/early 2023 and at that time they applied for funding for sidewalks, road resurfacing and water/sewer replacements on 5th and 6th Streets from the Railroad Tracks to Johnson Street.
