This YouTuber attempted to camp overnight at Minots Ledge Light. See how it went

A YouTuber recently attempted to spend the night on one of Massachusetts's more remote lighthouses: Cohassett's Minots Ledge Light.

Minots Ledge Light, located a mile off Cohasset and Scituate, now serves as an iconic landmark off the South Shore. The rough waters near Cohasset Rocks were home to many destructive storms that caused over 40 shipwrecks in the early 1800s, leading to the construction of a lighthouse in 1849.

The lighthouse standing today, however, is not the original tower, as the turbulent waves claimed the first Minots Light just years after it was built. Surely, a lighthouse in such a dangerous part of the ocean could not be hospitable, right?

YouTuber Wes Wherever decided to take the gamble, attempting to sleep at Minots Ledge Light in a recently published video. Here's how his adventure went.

    Who is Wes Wherever?

Wes Wherever is a thrill-seeking content creator who posts videos about his outdoor adventures in unexpected places throughout the country. For the past few months, Wes has been documenting a cross-country camper van trip with his mom and her dog, starting in Pennsylvania and working his way up to New England and gaining over 30K subscribers on the way.

In each state, Wes has uploaded videos of himself stealth camping, also known as free camping or boondocking, at various unconventional camping sites. A few weeks ago, Wes successfully camped overnight at the Bourne Rotary on Cape Cod , and then he decided to try his luck at Minots Light.

In the video, Wes said he wanted to camp in a lighthouse while in New England because they are so iconic to the area. To prepare for his overnight stay, Wes packed a tent, camping supplies and ingredients for a classic New England meal – Boston brown bread, baked beans and hot dogs.

Though he has camped in various dangerous places, including abandoned highway tunnels, mansions and bridges, the topography of Minots Light added an extra element of danger to this particular camping journey.

"I am looking at the water and I'm trying to gauge if it's safe or not, and it's not looking good," he said, while approaching the lighthouse via kayak.

In addition, Wes saw that the tower's ladder started about three feet up the structure. In the video, he decided that standing in his kayak to reach the ladder and secure his boat would be too dangerous, so he turned around, saying it would be "foolish" to continue in the current conditions.

Determined to make his second Massachusetts stealth camping adventure work, he instead chose to settle in for the night at a nearby island of rocks. He was able to find a flat surface without a lot of bird droppings for his tent and sleep with the sound of the waves in the background.

Despite not being able to sleep at the lighthouse, Wes still had a successful camping experience, thoroughly enjoying the beauty of the Cohasset coast. Wes said he will continue the New England part of his journey in New Hampshire and Maine.
