Joseph Donat starts as new city administrator for Poughkeepsie
Poughkeepsie Mayor Yvonne Flowers recently tapped Joseph Donat to be the city’s new administrator. Donat previously worked as the deputy chief of staff for former Congressman Sean Patrick Maloney in the 18th District, and as the city manager of Newburgh, New York. Most recently, Donat was Poughkeepsie’s Interim Development Director. Reflecting on his new role Tuesday with WAMC Hudson Valley Bureau Chief Jesse King, Donat says he’s been helping the city connect with business owners as it considers establishing a downtown Business Improvement District.

Among the big takeaways in a recent survey by the community organization Peekskill Walks were concern about reckless driving and support for Esther Place. “We knew that people were concerned about reckless driving and speeding,” says Conor Greene, co-founder and executive director of Peekskill Walks. “The survey responses solidified that.” Three quarters of survey respondents said that speeding and reckless driving is an issue in their neighborhood. “This is a serious alarm that is being sounded,” said Greene. “If there’s any number in the survey that City Hall needs to look at, it’s this number.”

City of Newburgh seeks applicants for Transportation Advisory Committee
NEWBURGH – The City of Newburgh is seeking volunteers to serve on the Transportation Advisory Committee (TAC) to fill two member positions. The TAC is responsible for advising the City Council on parking and transportation-related matters as well as guiding and reviewing the preparation of transportation and parking plans and programs. Among the functions and duties of the TAC are to evaluate and make recommendations on various issues, including but not limited to parking, traffic, and transportation, including alternative transportation modes such as pedestrian and bicycling.
Ulster County fire chief suspended then arrested
PLATTEKILL – The Plattekill Fire District Chief was suspended by the district commissioners at an emergency meeting of the board on July 18, following several personnel-related” complaints. The commissioners ordered Chief Robert Betanzos Jr. to return the district-owned chief’s vehicle to the district while the suspension is served. Betanzos, according to a Mid Hudson News source close to the investigation, says the suspended chief hid the district-owned vehicle in the garage of his private residence in Gardiner.
