GEORGETOWN COUNTY, S.C. (WBTW) — Georgetown County Council passed the second reading on a plan Tuesday night that many say will bring more development to areas like Murrells Inlet and Pawleys Island.

The proposed land-use element of the county’s comprehensive plan frames the future of development for the next 10 years. Dozens of residents spoke out against the plan recommendation when it was approved at a Planning Commission meeting in May.

Officials said this is the fifth time the plan has been revised since work on it began in 2020.

About 15 people spoke out against the plan at a public hearing during Tuesday night’s meeting. Many complained that the Waccamaw Neck is already too crowded and that crime and traffic are getting worse.

“I’ve complained and written to all the appropriate people, and everybody agrees with what I’m saying, but nothing gets done,” one resident said. “It’s time to sit back, pause and fix things properly, and support the people that elected you for the Waccamaw Neck.”

Councilmember Everett Carolina made a motion to defer action, but it failed. Councilmember Bob Anderson, who represents Pawleys Island, was not at the meeting.

The plan still needs to go in front of the county council for a third and final reading.
