Toledo boxer Jared Anderson set for August bout in Los Angeles
LOS ANGELES — Toledo native and rising heavyweight Jared "The Real Big Baby" Anderson will be back in action later this summer in California. Top Rank announced Monday that Anderson (17-0, 15 KOs) is set to face Martin Bakole (20-1, 15 KOs) as part of an undercard at BMO Stadium in Los Angeles on Saturday, Aug. 3.
Bowling Green men's basketball duo meet in Olympic qualifier as the Bahamas tops Lebanon
VALENCIA, Spain — In a matchup of a player and a coach with the Bowling Green State University men’s basketball team, the Bahamas’ national basketball team defeated Lebanon 89-72 on Saturday in the semifinals of an Olympic qualifying tournament. Lourawls Nairn, Jr., a second-year assistant coach with the Falcons, started for the Bahamas, which advanced to Sunday’s final against Spain. The winner earns a spot in the Paris Olympics. Nairn logged a little more than 12 minutes, recording two rebounds — both offensive — and an assist with a plus-minus rating of plus-6. Deandre Ayton (Portland Trailblazers) led the Bahamas with 24 points and 15 rebounds.

Pinball brings Toledoans together for celebration of Americana, friendly competition
Men, women, and children alike gathered Sunday for an evening of pinball, food, and drink at Heavy Beer Company in downtown Toledo. Every other weekend, Glass City Pinball hosts a Sunday Funday pinball tournament in which the top four players win the payout from the buy-in fee. There are also randomly drawn prize giveaways available to all players. “You’re just playing against yourself,” said Mike Pilarczyk, who’s been playing pinball for about a year and helps keep score at the Sunday tournaments. “That's always how I feel — you’re just trying to make your sport better. You're just really gonna play it against yourself and just become even better as you grow.” The tournament attracts players of all skill levels and ages, ranging from seasoned pinball wizards to raw novices. Glass City Pinball encourages anyone to come in and play, regardless of experience. All participants become registered in the International Flipper Pinball Association, which makes them official world-ranked pinball players.

As a fixture on Toledo television for more than three decades, Jim Tichy combined a friendly demeanor with an infectious passion for local sports that endeared him to thousands of viewers. A longtime sportscaster and sports director at Channel 24 (WDHO, later WNWO), Tichy joined the local TV sports scene fresh out of Bowling Green State University in 1972. Tichy became the dean of local sportscasters before he retired in 2007 after 35 years at Channel 24.

Mud Hens tough out 11th-inning win against Clippers, 6-5
COLUMBUS — The Toledo Mud Hens drew a walk and got plunked twice to score the go-ahead run and defeat the Columbus Clippers 6-5 in 11 innings in the series finale on Saturday at Huntington Park. The Mud Hens (41-45) forced a six-game series split against Columbus (38-48). In the top of the 11th inning, Spencer Torkelson drew a one-out walk off Columbus reliever John Doxakis, who hit Dillon Dingler and Bligh Madris on consecutive pitches. The latter scored Akil Baddoo as the courtesy runner. Michael Bienlien pitched a 1-2-3 bottom half for his first save of the season. Devin Sweet (5-5) completed the 10th inning and got the win, while Doxakis dropped to 1-3.
