Bittersweet Farms and Grace Community Center have recently partnered to expand the reach of their existing programs benefiting the community. The Bittersweet Gardens Vocational Program empowers adults with autism by providing opportunities through its Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) Program and year-round vegetable production initiatives. Grace Community Center plans to increase production at its urban garden, with the help of Bittersweet and other community partners and volunteers, to provide community-based training opportunities for Bittersweet participants.

Pinball brings Toledoans together for celebration of Americana, friendly competition
Men, women, and children alike gathered Sunday for an evening of pinball, food, and drink at Heavy Beer Company in downtown Toledo. Every other weekend, Glass City Pinball hosts a Sunday Funday pinball tournament in which the top four players win the payout from the buy-in fee. There are also randomly drawn prize giveaways available to all players. “You’re just playing against yourself,” said Mike Pilarczyk, who’s been playing pinball for about a year and helps keep score at the Sunday tournaments. “That's always how I feel — you’re just trying to make your sport better. You're just really gonna play it against yourself and just become even better as you grow.” The tournament attracts players of all skill levels and ages, ranging from seasoned pinball wizards to raw novices. Glass City Pinball encourages anyone to come in and play, regardless of experience. All participants become registered in the International Flipper Pinball Association, which makes them official world-ranked pinball players.

Toledo neighborhood beautification contest is back for 2024
The city of Toledo is inviting homeowners, business owners, and garden groups to demonstrate community pride by participating in a neighborhood beautification contest. Launched in 2021 to inspire residents to enhance their property exteriors, the contest is back, the city announced last week. The contest encourages participants to improve the facades of their homes, businesses, and gardens. The focus is on “community involvement and keeping Toledo the beautiful place it is,” said Amy Voigt, city spokesman. Participants are required to provide a maximum of 10 “after” photos of the property; the “before” photos are encouraged but not required. The deadline for entering the contest is July 22.

Person in charge (PIC) unable to demonstrate knowledge by having no critical violations (critical, corrected during inspection). PIC unable to demonstrate knowledge of temperatures and times for safe refrigerated food storage, hot holding, cooling and reheating (critical, corrected). PIC stated that foods are being left on the grill until they are 70 degrees then are being taken to the walk-in cooler. Ensure all foods are being transferred into the walk-in cooler once they have reached in internal temperature of 135 degrees and are not being left out to cool. Person in charge did not ensure that employees observed foods as they were received (critical, corrected). PIC stated that temperatures are no longer being taken when foods are received. Refrigerated, ready-to-eat, TCS foods not properly date marked (critical, corrected). Observed house-made dressings made more than 24 hours prior to inspection with no date mark.
