When Bridget (Guy) Williams first started to pole vault in seventh grade in the Hempfield Area School District, she always dreamed big. Williams went on to help the Hempfield girls win consecutive PIAA team titles, and she won the Class 3A pole vault title with a jump of 12 feet, 6 inches her senior season in 2014.

Chris Brunson, the championship-winning softball coach at Mount Pleasant Area, was hired last week to lead the program at Waynesburg University. Brunson steps down after six successful seasons guiding the Vikings, during which he compiled a mark of 72-33. His banner year came in 2021, when Mount Pleasant went 21-3, blasting Ellwood City 15-0 to win the WPIAL Class 3A Championship, and following with a 5-3 win against Mid Valley to claim state gold. Brunson, who also previously served as the athletic director at Mount Pleasant, played baseball at Hempfield Area and California University of Pennsylvania. He was an assistant baseball coach with the Vulcans for 14 years. This spring, Waynesburg went 23-18 overall, including 10-10 in the Presidents’ Athletic Conference. The Yellow Jackets made the conference title game before falling to top-seeded Westminster College.
