Philadelphians are splurging on back-to-school supplies
Higher prices aren't deterring Philadelphia parents from splurging on back-to-school supplies this season, according to a recent survey from consulting giant Deloitte.The big picture: As inflation cools, local parents and guardians are projected to spend 30% more than the national average on school products this year.State of play: Philly parents plan to spend an average of $761 per child on back-to-school items — up $144 from last year, per Deloitte.And despite supplies costing more this year, 9-in-10 caretakers surveyed also plan to spend the same or more than 2023.Yes, but: If budgets become tight, more than a third of people said they wouldn't hesitate to cut back on school supplies, per Deloitte.Plus: 33% of those surveyed planned to buy pre-owned products when they were available.Zoom in: Tech products accounted for the largest average spending for Philly parents ($538), followed by clothing and accessories ($312).What's ahead: Aug. 26 is the first day of school for Philly district students.

The School District of Philadelphia’s Find Your Fit school selection process allows students currently in pre-kindergarten through 11th grade to apply to attend any District school, with available space, outside of their neighborhood or catchment area for the following school year. The Find Your Fit school selection process for the 2025-2026 school year opens on September 13, 2024 at 4:00 pm and closes on October 23, 2024 at 11:59 pm.

RA Union negotiates new contract ahead of North Hall closure

With the announcement of President John Fry’s departure from Drexel University, The Triangle looks back at Fry’s 14 year tenure. 2010 – In 2010, Fry was appointed Drexel’s 14th president. In his inaugural address, he made clear three major objectives for his presidency: to “become one of academe’s most powerful engines for neighborhood improvement and regional economic growth,” to “mobilize our entrepreneurial and creative energies to confront major threats to human health, economic prosperity and the environment” and to “[maximize] Drexel’s global reputation and impact.”
