Penobscot Narrows Bridge suicide prevention barrier project delayed
PROSPECT -- A project to build suicide prevention barriers along the Penobscot Narrows bridge has been delayed. Paul Merrill with the Maine Department of Transportation says they devised a plan to begin construction on the barriers after finishing a lighting project on the bridge. That lighting project is now complete. However, due to the design of the barrier project, engineers have determined they need to perform a wind tunnel test with digital and physical models to ensure the overall safety of the bridge.

Plans for new bridge safety barrier delayed
The state transportation department said wind-tunnel testing needs to be done before a suicide-prevention barrier is installed on the Penobscot Narrows Bridge near Bucksport. Transportation Department spokesman Paul Merrill said engineers want to determine how the bridge would react to wind with the addition of a fence. "We want to make sure whatever we put on there is not going to change the functionality of the bridge," he said.
Matching grant helps restore historic building
HOLDEN--The historic Holden Town Hall building is getting a much needed upgrade. The two-story building, located on the Main Road in Holden, was built back in the 1870s when bathrooms were not indoors. Now, thanks to a $25,000 matching grant from the Lawrence Family Foundation, a bathroom is finally being added to the historic building and the first floor is also getting insulated.
Northport, Searsmont earmarked for Congressionally Directed Spending funds
The Towns of Northport and Searsmont are among seven municipalities appointed to share $7,528,000 in Congressionally Directed Spending for community and municipal facilities throughout Maine in the Fiscal Year (FY) 2025 Agriculture, Rural Development, and Food and Drug Administration Appropriations bill. The bill, which was officially approved by the Senate Appropriations Committee on July 11, now awaits consideration by the full Senate and House, according to the U.S. Senate Committee on Appropriations, in a news release.
