2 Romanians sentenced after stealing bank card numbers at Northwest Florida credit union, officials say

PENSACOLA, Fla. ( WKRG ) — Two Romanian men were sentenced to prison for stealing bank card numbers at a local credit union, according to the United States Attorney’s Office for the Northern District of Florida.

Those two men are Zamfir Nitu, 48, and Irinel Irimia, 42, reports said.

According to a USAO press release, Nitu and Irimia were arrested and eventually sentenced after Eglin Federal Credit Union found they had installed skimming devices into two of its ATMs in April 2023.

The two men obtained approximately $17,000 with the devices and unsuccessfully attempted to withdraw another $35,000.

The Okaloosa County Sheriff’s Office, the Santa Rosa County Sheriff’s Office, and Homeland Security Investigations worked on the case.

“Additionally, the assistance of Eglin Federal Credit Union’s Fraud Investigation Division was critical in gathering the necessary evidence,” the release said.

Assistant United States Attorney Walter Narramore prosecuted the case.

Jason R. Coody, the U.S. Attorney for the Northern District of Florida, announced the sentences for Nitu and Irimia after they pled guilty to conspiracy to steal bank card numbers and possession of bank card numbers.

The men now face 14 months in federal prison, a one-year supervised release, and deportation.
