Joint Drug Interdiction Effort Leads to Major Methamphetamine Seizure on Interstate 15
“During the week of June 10, 2024, an officer from the Murrieta Police Department Special Enforcement Team (SET) attended a joint highway drug interdiction training class in Murrieta. This class was presented by the United States Border Patrol’s Highway Interdiction, Detection, and Enforcement (HIDE) Team as part of a comprehensive counter-fentanyl initiative that began in October 2023 in southern California. The initiative focuses on intelligence collection and partnerships, utilizing local Customs and Border Protection (CBP) field assets supported by federal, state, local, tribal, and territorial partners to enhance resources, collaboration, and target fentanyl smuggling into the United States.

Man hospitalized, home destroyed after massive fire in Menifee
A man was hospitalized and a home destroyed when a massive fire broke out in Menifee early Monday morning. The blaze was first reported a little after 6 a.m. in the 24600 block of Conejo Drive, according to Riverside County Fire Department officials. Crews were dispatched to the scene, a single-story home, where they arrived to find the home engulfed in flames. The occupant of the home, an unidentified man, was able to escape but suffered some injuries that required hospitalization, firefighters said. It took crews nearly an hour to control the flames, which destroyed the home. They were able to prevent them from spreading to nearby structures. Three cars at the house were also damaged by the fire, crews noted. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

74-year-old woman from Mexico killed in rollover crash on I-15 in Wildomar
A 74-year-old woman from Mexico was killed in a violent rollover crash on I-15 in Wildomar over the weekend. It happened at around 1:50 p.m. Sunday afternoon on southbound lanes of the freeway near Diamond Drive, according to California Highway Patrol officers. Investigators say that the woman, Maria Martinez Lomeli, was in the rear passenger seat of a 2004 Kia Sorento traveling in the No. 2 lane when the driver, a 71-year-old Compton man, lost control of the vehicle. The car then veered into the center divider of the freeway, causing it to overturn and eject Lomeli, officers said. The car finally came to a rest near the divider on its wheels again. Investigators say that Lomeli was not wearing her seatbelt when the crash occurred. No other cars were involved in the crash. Riverside County Fire Department paramedics arrived to find Lomeli in grave condition. She was taken to a nearby hospital where she died shortly after. Both the driver and another passenger, a 66-year-old Compton woman, were taken to the hospital for treatment of major injuries. They were both said to be in stable condition as of Monday. CHP investigators are still investigating the crash.

One of three people suspected of stealing $2,300 in merchandise from a La Quinta cosmetics store pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor charge Tuesday. Khamyra Smith, 20, of Moreno Valley, pleaded guilty to grand theft of over $950 at the Larson Justice Center in Indio.
