Kain Killmer Prepares for Future
Recent Perry graduate, Kain Killmer, is preparing for his future outside of Perry. The multisport athlete is getting ready to take off for UW-Platteville, where he will wrestle. He just wrapped up his high school career when baseball ended earlier this month. He participated in football, wrestling, and baseball while at Perry. “Now that baseball is over I’ve been able to really focus on lifting hard and not worrying about fatiguing for games or anything like that. I’ve been good to go and getting plenty of mat time.” He’s excited to make the move and to get to work. His future coaches are already keeping him busy. “We text back and forth and will call each other. They’ve been sending me these great workout plans kind of telling me what I should expect and what I need to look forward to.” The UW-Platteville season begins on November 4th. Killmer hopes to make it into some of the varsity meets as a freshman.
Accolades Continue to Come in for Karagyn Whelchel
Perry softball star, Karagyn Whelchel, continues to be recognized for her tremendous sophomore season. Whelchel was recently named to the All District team in 4A Northwest. She was one of twelve girls who had her name on this list. Perry softball as a team had a 10-19 campaign. Despite 19 losses, Whelchel did her part hitting .454 and reaching base at a .490 clip. The second basemen drove in 17 RBI’s. Her coach Tina Lutterman had this to say about her lead off hitter. “Karagyn is a true competitor. She finds ways to compete and keeps her teams involved in the game and she’s not going to go down without giving her all.” One of the most impressive stats is the amount of times she struck out. The Jayette had just 5 K’s in 97 at bats. She added a team high 23 runs scored and 44 hits. The future looks bright for the Perry standout as she still has another two years ahead of her.
Summer Sports Over Across the State
Summer sports have concluded with the State Title games wrapping up for baseball and softball yesterday. It will be a dead period for the next few weeks before fall practices begin. Perry will be allowed to start cross county, volleyball, and football practices on August 12. Fall golf will also be allowed to start practicing that day, but Perry doesn’t participate in that. Tomorrow starts the mandatory Family Week non-contact period that will last until August 4. Perry will have their first cross country meet on August 29 and football will have their first game on the same day.
Bluejay Defense Struggled for Most of the Season
The Perry baseball team struggled for most of the season making the routine play. The Bluejays finished the year at 11-18. The defense committed 72 errors in the 29 games. That was an average of 2.5 errors a game. Helping your pitchers and making the plays you should is a key at all levels of baseball. Let’s look inside the numbers. Perry pitchers allowed 195 runs on the season and 123 of those were earned. That means 37 percent of the runs that came across the plate last year were unearned. Despite the errors, the Bluejays had their most win since 2016. Perry will look to shore up the defense and continue the momentum of the 11 win campaign for next season.
Two Mothers of Pitchers in 4A Softball Title Game are Jefferson-Scranton graduates
There’s an old saying that every time you watch a ball game something happens that you’ve never seen before. That certainly was the case late Thursday night when ADM and Carlisle met for the Class 4A Iowa High School State Softball Championship north of Ft. Dodge. Four pitchers were used in the game, won 7-6 by Carlisle, and two of the girls have Mothers who are Jefferson-Scranton High School graduates. Plus, each girl has two grandparents currently living in Jefferson.

ADM Baseball Looking Forward to Promising Future
Although the season ended earlier than the Adel-DeSoto-Minburn Baseball team would’ve liked, there is much to be stoked for going into next year. Head Coach Jason Book tells Raccoon Valley Radio that there will be no replacing the four seniors of Ben Greth, Sam Kock, Rhylan Stine-Smith, and Grant Rychnovsky, but is optimistic as the Tigers focus on the season ahead. Book is aware that there are holes on the roster that will need to be filled but anticipates the return of a core nucleus of players who gained experience this year, and believes that will help generate more cohesion to begin 2025.
DCG Says Goodbye to 11 Seniors
Dallas Center – Grimes softball has completed their 2024 season going 32-9 on the season and finished tied for 7th at the state tournament. ADM Baseball Head Coach on Players Enjoying Big Moments
The Adel-DeSoto-Minburn Baseball team was apart of some exciting sequences during the 2024 season, that Head Coach Jason Book relishes. The Tigers were a couple of games away from qualifying from the state tournament, but the good news is that much of their roster will stay intact for the 2025 season. A big moment in the Class 3A Substate 2 First Round game against the Ballard Bombers saw Senior Rhylan Stine-Smith blast a solo home run in the top of the fourth inning to put ADM in front 3-2, where they would go on to win. Head Coach Jason Book loves to see his players have time to celebrate the victories within the game as the sport of baseball brings lots of challenges.

ADM Softball Places Second for Class 4A to Conclude Remarkable Season
The Adel-DeSoto-Minburn Softball team competed hard in the Class 4A Championship game, but couldn’t skate past Carlisle late Thursday night as they lost 7-6. The Tigers and Wildcats didn’t begin the game until approximately 8:30pm, due to the Class 5A Championship game running a little long. Carlisle scored first in the second inning thanks to a single from Logan Brown to put the Wildcats up 1-0. ADM would respond heavily with bringing three runs across in the bottom of the second, then adding two more in the third for a 5-1 advantage. Carlisle refused to go away as in the bottom of the fourth inning, three runs were brought in with a two-run RBI from Kaliyah Brown as the Wildcats trailed 5-4.
