Perry baseball, softball sweep Greene County

The postseason is now in sight with both Perry baseball and softball teams looking to surpass last year’s marks in the final week of the regular season. (Note: Games covered June 25-30)

    Baseball (9-15)

In between a pair of losses, the Bluejays earned a sweep against Greene County (1-16) this season after defending Perry’s home diamond with a 1-0 win.

Putting most at-bats into play, the Bluejays struck out a season-low one time, providing a chance at bases in almost every appearance. That led to five singles from five batters, but it was Gabriel Beato-Amparo who was the first and only player from both dugouts to cross home plate — earning the go-ahead run in the fifth inning.

A rare occasion considering he ranks seventh in the league with a .407 batting average, Owen Myers may have been held off the bases, but he provided a security blanket from mound with nine strikeouts thrown against one walk and three hits.

Getting that one win on the board amid losses to West Marshall (28-1) and Winterset (12-12) put the Jays in prime position to surpass last year’s 10-game win total.

With four games left on the regular season schedule, three more wins would be the most for Perry since 2015. Clarke (16-11), Des Moines North (2-25) and Carroll (7-15) are on deck before the Bluejays head to top-seeded Grinnell (22-9) to kickoff substate action. They last met in 2022 and have not defeated the Wildcats since 2016.

    Softball (7-16)

With three games left in the regular season, the Jayettes are now three games away from surpassing last year’s nine wins, following a split of two games this past week.

After quickly falling behind 5-0 against West Marshall (19-6), Perry fell 10-2 to the Trojans on June 24, bringing the series to 3-3 since joining the Heart of Iowa.

Two days later, Perry swept Greene County (4-17) for the first time after collecting an 11-1 win that wrapped in the fifth inning due to the 10-run rule. That was the third time that rule was in effect for Perry compared to one time last year.

Helping give that boost, Karagyn Whelchel hit her first-ever home run and scored on three of her plate appearances, driving in four runs in the process. Maci Tunink pulled double-duty pitching and at the plate, allowing just three hits while she logged two hits and three RBIs herself.

After the regular season wraps on Monday against Des Moines Hoover (3-18), the Jayettes head to Denison-Schlwesig (11-15) for the first round of regional action. The Monarchs are winners of three of their last five games.
