    Perth Amboy police detective injured in Rahway shooting, three suspects apprehended

    RAHWAY - A Perth Amboy detective was injured after being struck by gunfire Wednesday night during a shooting in the area of Broad Street, according to the Perth Amboy police chief.

    "The City of Perth Amboy acknowledges the recent incident involving our detectives in Rahway. One of our detectives was injured while on duty, investigating with the Rahway Police. He suffered gunshot wounds and was transported to an area trauma center, where he is in stable condition. Our thoughts and prayers are with him for a swift recovery" Perth Amboy Police Chief Lawrence Cattano said in an email statement

    "We commend the bravery and professionalism of all officers in handling this situation. As this is an active investigation, we are unable to provide further details at this time," he said. .

    The New Jersey State PBA said the detective was taken to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital.

    "Please keep him in your prayers. NJ State PBA President Peter Andreyev is at the hospital with the detectives fellow officers and family," the New Jersey State PBA Facebook post said.

    Rahway Mayor Raymond Giacobbe said Perth Amboy police officers, assisted by Rahway police, were executing a search warrant when three suspects attempted to flee the scene.

    "During this incident, one suspect discharged a firearm, striking a Perth Amboy police officer in the leg; fortunately the injury is non-life threatening," the mayor said in a Facebook post.

    Giacobbe said at this time no other officers have reported injuries, one suspect suffered a gunshot wound to the leg and all the suspects are in custody.

    "My thoughts and prayers are with the injured officer. I extend my heartfelt wishes for a swift recovery and offer support to his family during this challenging time," Giacobbe said in the Facebook post.

    The shooting occurred around 9 p.m.

    Rahway police said there is an ongoing investigation.

    The incident is under investigation by the New Jersey Attorney General's Office, a police official said.
