A New Jersey police officer was shot in the line of duty in Rahway Wednesday night, and officials said he was recovering at a local hospital Thursday morning.

The officer, a detective from the Perth Amboy Police Department, was shot three times during, according to a statement on X from the New Jersey State Police Benevolent Association. He was taken to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in New Brunswick, where he was in stable condition, according to the department.

Perth Amboy police officials said the detective had been working on an investigation with the Rahway police when he was attacked at around 8:40 p.m. They were not immediately able to say how the shooting unfolded, or what was being investigated at the time. Police said they could not provide information about a potential suspect.

New Jersey State Attorney General Matthew Platkin praised the other law enforcement officers at the scene for quickly coming to the aid of the detective.

“I am resolute in my commitment to work with our law enforcement and community partners to end gun violence in our state, and to do everything in our power to prevent this kind of violence against law enforcement in the future,” Platkin said in a statement.

This is a developing story based on preliminary information from police.
