RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) — With school starting soon, many school districts in the Central Virginia area are still in search of superintendents.

Several school districts in the Central Virginia area have been faced with finding a new superintendent due to varying reasons. With the upcoming school year just a month away, 8News has rounded up where each district stands in their search for a new superintendent.

    Hanover County

Most recently, on Wednesday, July 17 , Hanover County Public Schools Superintendent Dr. Michael Gill announced he will be resigning from his position in a message addressed to families, faculty and staff.

Gill was hired as superintendent for the school district in November 2015 after having served as the county’s assistant superintendent a year prior. He earned a Doctor of Education, Master’s degree and post-Master’s certificate at Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond.

The Hanover County School Board will review Gill’s resignation at an upcoming meeting on Tuesday, July 23.

    Petersburg

The search for a new superintendent for Petersburg City Public Schools began in March, after superintendent Tamara Sterling announced her resignation on Wednesday, March 20 , which went into effect on April 30. Sterling served as superintendent for a year and three months.

In the interim of searching for a new superintendent, Chief of Staff John Farrelly oversaw daily operations. However, on Tuesday, June 11, Farrelly issued his resignation after just over a month in the role.

Farrelly reportedly accepted a position with Caroline County Public Schools as its director of finance.

On Wednesday, June 12, the school division announced Yolanda Brown to be its next interim superintendent.

Brown later took on the role as acting superintendent , with her first day on the job taking place on July 9. She shared a 100-day entry plan with community members at a meeting on Wednesday, July 17.

Brown will stay on the role until Oct. 31. It’s unclear what happens next for the role of superintendent after Browns’ term is complete.

    Chesterfield County

On Tuesday, April 9, Dr. Mervin B. Daugherty announced his retirement from his position as the superintendent of Chesterfield County Public Schools after 50 years working in education. His last day as superintendent was on June 30.

Dr. Daugherty became Chesterfield’s superintendent on Nov. 1, 2018 and was named Superintendent of the Year for Region 1 of Virginia earlier this year.

    Prince George County

Prince George County Schools is searching for a new superintendent after its previous superintendent, Dr. Lisa Pennycuff, announced her retirement on April 19 in order to care for her mother.

Pennycuff served Prince George County Public Schools for 9 years in different roles and will step away from the job on July 31.

In the meantime, the board has selected Dr. Joseph O. Cox Jr. to serve as acting superintendent. He has recently served as the superintendent for Colonial Heights Public Schools for 18 years — the longest in the district’s history.

The Prince George County School Board will be conducting interviews for the position of superintendent from Aug. 7 to Aug. 21, according to Prince George County Public Schools .
