PETOSKEY — Visitors in Petoskey this summer will find freshly paved roads and upgraded parks, with construction wrapping up just in time for the busy July 4 holiday.

“I’m pleased to report that the projects we started in April, kind of anticipating this time when all of our visitors arrive, have pretty much completed,” said city manager Shane Horn during Monday’s Petoskey City Council meeting.

Street projects on Bay View Avenue, Winter Park Lane, Rose Street, Balsam Avenue and East Mitchell Street are all finished.

“Bay View Avenue, that was a reconstruct with new water and sewer and sidewalks. That project is complete,” Horn said. “Winter Park Lane, Rose Street and Balsam Avenue resurfacing is all complete. We’re just watching the grass grow at this point, which is outstanding. East Mitchell Street resurfacing on Division Street to the city limits, and then the county took it from the city limits to Division Road, has been completed as well.”

Horn added that the city finished the last bit of striping on the city’s portion of the project on Monday night.

A renovation project at Sunset Park, a roadside park along U.S. 31 with a gazebo, scenic views over Little Traverse Bay and a staircase that leads down to the Bayfront Park area, is also completed.

The project included new landscaping, new fencing and increased accessibility.

“If you’ve not had a chance to walk through there, I would certainly encourage you to do so. It’s wonderful,” Horn said. “Since I’ve been here, you see a lot of cars parked there enjoying the wonderful views but you didn’t see a lot of people out milling around, and I saw a lot of folks just walking along the pathway, looking at the view area that we created and it’s just wonderful to see people enjoying that opportunity to really get out and explore.”

Work at the Winter Sports Park, including new roofing, windows and doors, has also finished.

“That was a well-needed upgrade, completed just in time for our kids camp with about 50 campers for this summer,” Horn said. “We’re excited for that project to be completed.”
