    Trace Adkins, autocross and more: Emmet-Charlevoix County Fair returns for 118th year

    PETOSKEY — Whether you're in the market for a livestock showing or a country music concert, you'll find it at the 118th Emmet-Charlevoix County Fair.

    The fair officially kicks off on Monday, Aug. 19, though there will be some activity on the fairgrounds Saturday-Sunday, Aug. 17-18 with the arrival of animals and registrations.

    Now in her 29th year as fair manager, Agnes Shaw said there's something at the fair for everyone, whether it's a trip to the carnival, getting a seat at the country music concert, or checking out the fruits of the 4-H Club's labors during animal shows.

    Animal events

    During the week of events, there will be livestock shows, horse shows and more.

    The week's schedule includes everything from 4-H horse shows featuring dressage and speed classes to pocket pet shows, starting as early as 10 a.m. on Monday.

    The main 4-H event will be the market livestock auction from 3-6 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 22.

    Carnival

    The Emmet-Charlevoix County Fair is welcoming back Skerbeck Family Carnival, with the carnival running from 4-10 p.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 20; 1-11 p.m. Wednesday-Saturday, Aug. 21-24; and 1-6 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 25.

    The ride band will be $20 Tuesday-Thursday, $25 Friday-Saturday, and Sunday will be a one ticket to ride day.

    According to the fair's website, a megaband can be purchased to bring unlimited rides for the full week for $80 ahead of time, or $90 onsite.

    Tickets are available as well for 4 for $5, with most rides requiring 2-6 tickets per rider.

    Firefighter show

    Back again is the interactive firefighter show for kids.

    Free with fair entry, there will be three firefighter shows daily from Tuesday-Saturday. Tuesday's shows will kick off at 4, 6 and 8 p.m., and the shows Wednesday-Saturday will be at 2, 4 and 6 p.m.

    Grandstand vehicle events

    The grandstand will host several days' worth of events for people to check out.

    Thursday-Friday, Aug. 22-23, people will be able to attend the Monster Truck Showdown. Thursday and Friday's events both kickoff at 5 p.m., with engines roaring at 7 p.m.

    Tickets for adults are $23 each, and tickets for children are $11 each. A children's ticket covers ages 2-12. Children under age 2 can get into the event free with an adult.

    At 5 p.m. on Saturday, the autocross racing event will be back.

    Tickets are $18 for adults and $6 for children ages 5-12. The event is free for children ages 4 and younger with an adult.

    Live Music

    While the main event may be the country music concert on Wednesday night, there will be live music available at the fair all week long.

    From 2:30-5:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 20, Steel & Wood Bluegrass will be performing on the back porch.

    On Wednesday, Trace Adkins will headline the concert at the grandstands. He'll take the stage at 8 p.m. Waylon Hanel will serve as the opening act, taking the stage at 6:45 p.m. Tickets cost between $55-100.

    Shaw said so far, around 2,300 tickets have been sold. There are 900 individual seats for the concert, and the grandstands are able to hold up to 2,500.

    From 4-6 p.m. and 9-11 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 23, the Backroads Band will perform in the beer tent.

    Lee Fayssoux will also perform in the beer tent from 2-5:30 p.m. on Sat. Aug. 24.
