A brush fire ignited in Phelan on Wednesday afternoon before being quickly contained by firefighters, officials said.

The fire was first reported about 2:40 p.m. near Phelan and Trinidad roads and quickly grew to an estimated 5.5 acres in size, according to San Bernardino County Fire Protection District and CAL FIRE officials.

Firefighting aircraft were summoned to assist firefighters on the ground in getting control of the flames, CAL FIRE officials said.

Authorities announced the forward progress of the fire had been stopped about 3:15 p.m.

No information regarding the cause of the fire was available.

On the eve of Independence Day, authorities reminded residents that all fireworks are illegal throughout the high desert, with the exceptions of Adelanto and Barstow, which permit "safe and sane" varieties.

San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department officials have warned that deputies will take a "zero tolerance" stance toward illegal fireworks, including seeking maximum penalties against users and holding violators accountable for any fires they may start.
