The Phillies can officially play .500 baseball for the remainder of the season and match last year’s 90-72 record. We aren’t at the trade deadline, we aren’t at the All Star Break. We are still a week and a half from Memorial Day.

This has the makings of a summer we talk about for a long, long time.

The fans at Citizens Bank Park were treated to a 10-5 win over the Mets on Wednesday night. It didn’t even feel that close after New York put up three meaningless runs in the 8th.

Suarez, by his own Cy Young campaign standards, hardly went deep into the game at all. He still managed to work through 5 innings, allow zero earned runs and become the first Phillies pitcher ever to go 8-0 in his first nine starts.

Johan Rojas dropped a “can of corn” fly ball to begin the game. Nick Castellanos inexplicably tried to extend a single into a double and was out by 10 feet. J.T. Realmuto ran through a stop sign and was out at home plate. Watching this team, their mistakes just never seem to end up mattering anymore.

Rob Thomson’s postgame press conference lasted all of two minutes. He was asked about all of the above. It felt procedural if nothing else, it’s as if there’s hardly anything left to even question. All this team does is win and in the case of Wednesday night, win convincingly.

This team at some point will slump. This team will eventually lose another series. This team will not just coast to their current pace of winning 114 games. But for a team who preached the importance of a hot start in spring training, they’re following through. What we’re watching is truly special.
