Swim instructor’s tips to keep your child safe this summer

Drowning is one of the leading preventable causes of death for children under the age of 14. Emily Speer, owner of Speer Swim School, joined PHL17 with ways to keep your child safe around the pool this summer.

“I kind of take it from a mom perspective and the teaching perspective and the swim background as well,” said Emily, a mother of five children and former public school teacher.

She outlined the five layers of drowning protection which include barriers and alarms, water watchers, swim lessons, life jackets and emergency preparedness.

“When we’re talking about life vests, we’re talking about something that is US Coast Guard approved so you want to be looking for a sticker on there.”
