Tyrese Maxey signs five-year, $204 million max with 76ers

Hours after the Philadelphia 76ers inked nine-time All-Star Paul George on a four-year max, they will be signing guard Tyrese Maxey to a five-year, $204 million max contract, ESPN NBA insider Adrian Wojnarowski was first to report Monday.

Maxey’s deal is agreed upon in principle; in order to re-sign him using his full bird rights, the 76ers must use all of their cap space first. According to ESPN’s NBA cap analyst Bobby Marks, they have $9 million left in projected cap space after the Maxey acquisition.

Maxey, 23, was eligible to get extended last offseason, though the 76ers opted to not to to keep a max slot open. They were ultimately able to fill that with George–the best option on the market–while using the rest of their cap space on free-agent role players, including Eric Gordon and Andre Drummond , who spent the 2021-22 season with the 76ers.

Maxey could have also been subject to the Rose Rule –would’ve allowed him to sign a max worth 30 percent of the cap, instead of 25 percent–if he made All-NBA. Though the All-NBA guard fell just shy of netting an extra $30 million, being the third name left off the third-team behind Boston’s Jaylen Brown and George. Regardless, his new deal will start at $35.1 million and last through 2028-29, his age-28 season, when he’s on the hook for $46.4 million, per Spotrac .

He averaged 25.9 points, 3.7 rebounds and 6.2 assists on 45.0 percent shooting, including 37.3 percent from 3-point range and 86.8 percent from the 3-point line. Maxey’s developed into one of the most electric guards across the NBA with the rock in his hands and an invaluable piece to Philadelphia’s core.

Now, let’s wait and see how the 76ers continue building this roster with the rest of their cap space before Maxey officially puts pen-to-paper.
