Slightly less humid in Philadelphia Sunday, Beryl could bring late-week rain to the Delaware Valley 03:30

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- Sunday is Day 4 of a heat wave around the Delaware Valley, with highs in the low 90s and a heat index (feels-like temperatures) up to 100 degrees.

But it looks like Sunday's heat won't be going anywhere too soon. The National Weather Service issued a Heat Advisory from 10 a.m. Monday to 8 p.m. Tuesday in most of our region for maximum heat index values around 100 degrees.

Areas with the highest heat index will be across southeast Pennsylvania and most of New Jersey except for the coastal strip and northern Delaware.

But today's heat and humidity will not be as bad as yesterday's because a weak cold front moved through the area early this morning, turning the wind briefly to the north and ushering in slightly drier air.

Isolated thunderstorms are possible again today with brief downpours providing relief from the heat. However, most of the area will remain dry and any storms are not expected to reach severe limits.

The National Weather Service issued a flash flood warning until 8 p.m. Sunday in Burlington and Ocean counties in New Jersey after radar showed pop-up thunderstorms.

Looking ahead into next week, we start off hot and humid with temps in the 90s through Wednesday, then we'll see a slight cool-down with highs in the upper 80s and low 90s by the middle of the week. But with those slightly lower temps comes an increased chance of showers and storms, in part from the remnants of Hurricane Beryl.

In fact, unsettled weather will likely stay with us through at least the start of next weekend, so keep it here, and keep an eye to the sky!

    Beryl heads toward Texas

Relief from the heat may be headed our way by mid-week as the remnants of Beryl cross the region. The once powerful Hurricane is now a tropical storm headed to the Texas coast. It is expected to re-strengthen to a Category 1 hurricane shortly before landfall later tonight somewhere between Corpus Christie and Houston.

Heavy rain and flooding are the primary concern with up to 6" of rain in some areas. Beryl will then move quickly to the northeast and weaken to a remnant low by Tuesday morning.

That remnant low will merge with a cold front and be steered toward the Ohio Valley by Wednesday and eventually bring rain and thunderstorms to the Philadelphia area Wednesday night into Friday. The heaviest rain looks to be on Thursday.
