Eagles’ Offensive Star Sets The Record Straight On 2023 Struggles

The 2023 NFL season was one that the Philadelphia Eagles would like to forget.

The Eagles got off to a 10-1 start and seemed primed to represent the NFC in the Super Bowl for the second straight year, but down the stretch, something happened.

Philadelphia lost five of its last six regular-season games to finish 11-6, becoming the first team in NFL history to not record 12 wins after winning 10 of its first 11 contests. Philly was then blasted by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the Wild Card Round.

So, what exactly went wrong for the Eagles over the final month-and-a-half of 2023?

A porous defense certainly played a significant role, and some rather inconsistent play from Jalen Hurts—not to mention some potential locker-room issues—also hurt the team, as well.

But even during Philadelphia’s 11-game run to begin the season, something did not seem quite right, and tackle Lane Johnson said as much during an interview with Kay Adams of the Up & Adams Show.

“Even when we were 10-1, those games felt like they were a lot closer than they needed to be,” Johnson said . “Felt like we left a lot of points on the board, but just collectively, it was frustrating.”

Can the Eagles bounce back in 2024?

The Eagles have certainly been busy this offseason, signing running back Saquon Barkley and edge rusher Bryce Huff in free agency and also revamping their secondary in the NFL Draft.

But has Philadelphia done enough to vault itself back into contention in 2024?

There are still a lot of question marks surrounding this team.

First of all, we don’t know if Nick Sirianni still has control of the locker room or not. There was a lot of speculation about him potentially being fired at the end of last season, but Philly retained him.

It also remains to be seen if Hurts can rebound after a very disappointing 2023, and it should be noted that he has really only had one very good season in three years as the Eagles’ full-time starter.

As for Philadelphia’s offseason additions, Barkley has a checkered injury history and averaged just 3.9 yards per carry last season, and while Huff is a great pickup, Philly traded Haason Reddick after acquiring him. In essence, Huff can be viewed as a downgrade on the edge.

Plus, Philly’s defense is still iffy.

We’ll see if the Eagles can bounce back come September.
