Eagles training camp features former 1st-round pick pushing for starting job

Most Philadelphia Eagles fans probably didn’t have a Mekhi Becton breakout on their training camp bingo cards.

    Alas, here we are.

With right guard Tyler Steen out of action on Monday, it was Becton–an offensive tackle–filling in at that spot. That was especially notable because first-team right tackle Lane Johnson didn’t practice either.

That the Eagles chose to push Becton to guard instead of simply having him step in at his natural right tackle could hint that Steen’s spot in the starting lineup isn’t a guarantee.

Performance and injuries spoiled Becton’s four seasons with the New York Jets after the team made him the 11th pick in the 2020 draft. A move to right tackle after losing the left tackle job didn’t help.

The first audition for Becton at right guard was a success, which is saying something, considering he looked good against the likes of Jalen Carter and a deep Eagles front seven. If it continues, Monday might’ve been the tell that he’s the future right guard next to Johnson.
