Philadelphia Eagles Rookie RB Named Player To Watch For 2024

After a disappointing 2023 season, the Philadelphia Eagles are looking to have a bounce back year. This offseason, the Eagles made a few major changes on the offensive side of the ball to hopefully help with that.

First, their All-Pro center Jason Kelce decided to retire. Kelce was regarded as one of the best centers in the NFL, and him retiring will be a big blow. The Eagles have had one of the best offensive lines in the league for many years with him at center, but the group should still be above average overall.

While losing Kelce was a big deal, the Eagles did bring in arguably the best running back during free agency in Saquon Barkley. When healthy, Barkley is one of the best running backs in the league, and behind what should still be a very good offensive line in Philadelphia, he is poised for a great season.

Even though Barkley is going to be the workhorse for the Eagles, he isn’t the only running back who has been impressive this offseason. So far during training camp, rookie halfback Will Shipley has been turning some heads.

Recently, Pro Football Network wrote about Shipley being an under the radar rookie to watch.

Here’s what they had to say about Shipley .

“Second-round Eagles CB Cooper DeJean might’ve been the easy selection here had he not suffered a hamstring injury that will cost him three weeks of practice.

Fourth-round RB Will Shipley received first-team training camps this week when Barkley sat out a session. He made the most of his opportunity with a highlight-reel catch on Sunday. Veteran Kenneth Gainwell is a useful player, but Shipley could be a higher-upside backup in Philadelphia.”

Will Shipley could be a sleeper for the Eagles

Shipley was a very interesting prospect coming out of Clemson, as he was both a good runner and receiver. With the success of Clemson as a program, Shipley has played on some very good teams and has had some nice games on big stages.

In three seasons at Clemson, Shipley totaled just under 3,000 rushing yards and 30 rushing touchdowns while averaging 5.2 yards per carry. While he was certainly more known as a runner, he also totaled over 30 receptions in each of his final two seasons at school.

While Barkley will be the main back for the Eagles, Shipley’s ability to both run and catch the ball could result in him finding himself as the backup or third-down back as the season goes on. The Eagles will likely want to make sure they don’t overuse Barkley, and that could result in opportunities for Shipley.
