Philadelphia Eagles rookie cornerback Quinyon Mitchell is quiet up until he's on the practice field competing against his teammates.
Mitchell has not only talked smack to No. 1 wide receiver A.J. Brown while covering him in practice but now also to No. 2 wide receiver DeVonta Smith.
"Today was the first day I went against him. I got open. And he told me my route was trash. I like it, though," Smith told reporters during training camp. "He's a great guy. I like what I've seen — he's moving around a lot."
That's pretty bold of the Eagles' first-round pick to be speaking to two of the best receivers in the league, but there's a reason behind his madness .
“Yeah, yeah, I talk a little trash,” Mitchell said back in June. “Just to push my teammates, compete and when I get that chance and that opportunity, just going out and grinding our good days.”
Mitchell also isn't the only one playing the trash talk game, however. Brown recently admitted that he tries to get the rookie fired up.
“That’s not by design," Brown said. "That’s me kind of picking a fight with him, trying to get him going. Like you said, he likes to talk trash at me. But I’m just picking a fight with him to make practices interesting.
"He’s not fazed. Guys are going to talk. I’m not really a talker on the field, but guys are going to talk, and he has to compete. He’s been doing a great job. We’ve been battling on the 1-on-1s."
Mitchell worked with the second-team defense for the majority of training camp but has taken some first-team reps where he held his own, per several reports.
However, he's not quite ready to jump ahead of veterans Isaiah Rodgers or Kelee Ringo on the depth chart just yet.
But with more 1-v-1 opportunities against Brown and Smith, there's a chance things could change by Week 1.
