The PGA Tour has teed up a major event in the Philadelphia region.
Why it matters: These elite golf tournaments are rare in the Philly metro, and this event will bring some of the biggest pros to the area next year.
Driving the news: The newly renamed Truist Championship — formerly known as the Wells Fargo Championship — will be hosted at The Philadelphia Cricket Club 's Wissahickon Clubhouse in Montgomery County May 5-11, 2025.
Between the lines: Truist Financial Corp. , a Charlotte-based bank with a significant presence in the Philly region , struck a deal to become the new title sponsor of the event after Wells Fargo announced in December it wouldn't be renewing its sponsorship.
- The event is held annually in Charlotte at the Quail Hollow Club, which is hosting the PGA Championship around the same time next year.
- So the Truist Championship is heading to the Wissahickon Clubhouse for 2025, before it returns to Charlotte.
By the numbers: The Philadelphia Cricket Club expects the four-day tournament will have a $140 million economic impact on the region.
How it works: The Truist Championship is one of the PGA Tour's eight Signature Events .
- The tournament will include 70 of the world's best players, like Rory McIlroy, Scottie Scheffler and Collin Morikawa.
Zoom out: The announcement comes as Aronimink Golf Club in Delaware County's Newtown Square is preparing to host the 2026 PGA Championship .
What's next: Tickets will go on sale around the end of the year at TruistChampionship.com .
