The Philadelphia Phillies find themselves locked deep in battle with the Los Angeles Dodgers Wednesday night. After losing Austin Hays to injury in the top of the third, the Phillies would put Johan Rojas into the game to man center field so that Brandon Marsh could move to left field.

In the bottom of the fourth inning, Rojas would do what Rojas does best: make a spectacular defensive play.

Rojas has been one of the sport's best fielders since debuting for the Phillies on July 15th, 2023. He has tallied 15 Outs Above Average in his short tenure in the Majors, with six coming this season.

It is plays like the one he made tonight that have kept Rojas in the Major Leagues. While he is one of the best defenders in the sport, he is also one of the worst hitters in the sport.

Rojas enters Wednesday batting .238/.273/.299 on the season with eight extra base hits, 23 RBI, 17 stolen bases, and a 62 OPS+ across 261 plate appearances in 82 games. While this could be the product of sporadic playing time, the context does not make the numbers look any more appealing.

While the offensive production is not appealing, the defense more than makes up for it. Rojas has made multiple defensive gems in the last month alone, and does not seem to be slowing down any time soon.

With Hays potentially going on the injured list, Rojas will get many more opportunities over the next week at the plate and in the field. While he is in the field, make sure you have your popcorn ready.
