A 10-year-old boy died after being removed from South Mountain on Tuesday, the Phoenix Fire Department said.

Firefighters from Tempe, Phoenix and Chandler responded to South Mountain around 2 p.m. Tuesday to rescue a 10-year-old boy suffering from a possible heat-related medical emergency, officials said.

The boy was taken off the trail by a Phoenix police helicopter, loaded into an ambulance and transported to the hospital.

Officials said early reports indicated the boy was hiking with relatives.

Just before 9 p.m., Phoenix police announced the boy had died as a result of a heat-related medical event.

The death was under investigation by detectives with the Phoenix Police Department, according to Sgt. Brain Bower.
