    Which grocery stores sell the most in the Phoenix metro? Here's the list

    The Phoenix metro’s grocery market is dominated by Fry’s Food Stores, which stands to grow its footprint as Fry’s parent company, Ohio-based Kroger Co., negotiates an acquisition of Safeway and Albertsons stores.

    According to research done by Chain Store Guide, Fry’s Food Stores has 93 locations in Maricopa and Pinal counties, and in 2023 saw nearly $5.6 billion in sales in the market, easily topping the list and commanding a 28.32% market share over its closest competitor, Arkansas-based Walmart, which saw $3.5 billion in sales, and commanded a 17.83% market share.

    Here are the top 15 grocery stores in Maricopa and Pinal counties, organized by market share:

    1. Fry’s Food Stores, 28.32% market share
    2. Walmart, 17.83% market share
    3. Costco Wholesale, 11.81% market share
    4. Safeway, 9.87% market share
    5. Bashas’ Inc., including Food City and AJ’s Fine Foods 5.63% market share
    6. Target, 4.18% market share
    7. Albertsons, 4.02% market share
    8. Sprouts Farmers Markets, 3.40% market share
    9. Sam’s Club, 3.36% market share
    10. WinCo Foods, 2.24% market share
    11. Walmart Neighborhood Market, 1.68% market share
    12. Trader Joe’s, 1.53% market share
    13. Los Altos Ranch Market, 1.19% market share
    14. Whole Foods Market, 1.06% market share
    15. El Super, 0.82% market share
