A 40-year-old man has been arrested in connection with the shooting death that occurred early in the morning on July 14 at a Phoenix hotel, police said.

Homicide investigators worked multiple leads in the case, police said, and were led to Martin Perez Gonzalez as a “potential suspect” in the killing of Moses Ayala, 47, who was found with multiple gunshot wounds about 5 a.m. at the hotel near 1600 North Black Canyon Access Road

“As the case progressed, probable cause was established to arrest Perez Gonzalez as the suspect in the homicide,” a Phoenix Police Department release stated.

Perez Gonzalez was arrested July 22.

“During an interview, he made a self-defense claim that was not supported by the evidence gathered during the investigation,” according to the release, and he was booked on one count of murder.

The investigation remains active, police said.
