Diamondbacks acquire A.J. Puk in trade as Marlins renew sell-off before deadline

The Marlins have renewed their sell-off right before the trade deadline.

Miami traded pitcher A.J. Puk to the Diamondbacks in exchange for prospects Deyvison De Los Santos an Andrew Pintar, ESPN’s Jeff Passan first reported .

De Los Santos, a corner infielder, was Arizona’s No. 14 prospect, and Pintar, an outfielder was ranked 30th, according to MLB Pipeline’s D-backs list .

Puk, once a top prospect himself in the A’s system, has turned himself into a viable reliever the last three seasons, two of which have come in Miami.

The southpaw started 2024 as a starter, but the Marlins ended that effort after Puk’s ERA ballooned to 9.22 after four outings.

Nevertheless, since switching roles to a back-end reliever, Puk has a 2.08 ERA with a 0.76 WHIP with 33 strikeouts in 30 1/3 innings.

It has been a disappointing year for the Marlins, who reached the playoffs last year as a National League wild-card team but are now 37-66 and in the NL East basement.

The trade comes nearly three months after they dealt two-time batting champion Luis Arraez to the Padres.

Arizona, last year’s NL champions, are in the thick of the race again.

Much like 2023, they’re hovering around .500 with a 53-50 mark.

They sit just 1.0 game back of the final wild-card spot.

Their pitching has been in the bottom half of the league, though, with their relievers holding a 4.24 ERA (22nd in MLB) on Thursday.

It likely won’t be the final move for Miami before the July 30 deadline, as The Post’s Jon Heyman reported earlier this month that infielder/outfielder Jazz Chisholm and closer Tanner Scott are pieces that could be moved.
