An 81-year-old man died Sunday morning after he was hit by a vehicle while standing next to his bicycle on the sidewalk in the 2800 block of East Grandview Road, Phoenix police said.

The suspected driver of the vehicle, Alberto Chilel Santos, 27, has been booked on charges of manslaughter and leaving the scene of a collision.

Officers were called to the crash location near 28 th Street and Grandview Road about 6 a.m. July 28 and found Eduardo Ramirez Jimenez, 81, with signs of trauma. He died at the scene.

There was no vehicle involved in the crash at the scene but the suspected vehicle was found nearby “with damage consistent with a recent collision,” a Phoenix Police Department release stated.

Officers also found and detained Chilel Santos, who was taken into custody. He showed signs of impairment, police said.

Preliminary information obtained by detectives suggests Chilel Santos was heading east on Grandview Road when he veered into oncoming traffic, then onto the sidewalk where he collided with Ramirez Jimenez.

Chilel Santos admitted to driving off after the collision but was not aware anyone was hit, police said.
