The City of Las Cruces does not need a sales tax/GRT tax increase
The City of Las Cruces is right now conducting a campaign to somehow convince hard-pressed city residents that it really needs a sales tax/grt tax increase. This despite the city having one of the highest-paid officials in the state, City Manager Ikani Taumoepeau, who makes even more than the Governor of New Mexico in what is regarded by some accounts to be the poorest area in the nation, despite the City being top heavy with high-paid senior City management in such a small city in such a poor area, and even more importantly, despite the City consistently running budget surpluses for many years now. With all the high-paid City management and ongoing surpluses, it’s clear that the City of Las Cruces does not need any more money.

New Rec Center set to break ground in October

There will be a groundbreaking on October 17, according to Construction Manager agency Scott Taylor. Jaynes Corporation, the contractor building the rec center, will begin construction on the plot of land south of the Artesia Aquatic Center on October 21.

Nick Ferenchak likes his quiet — whether sleeping at night or hiking in the Sandia Mountains — and he has a plan to preserve his quietude from noisy vehicles. Ferenchak, an assistant professor in the Gerald May Department of Civil, Construction and Environmental Engineering at the University of New Mexico, is the president of Not-A-Loud, a local company that creates noise camera systems that take pictures of the license plates on vehicles that produce too many decibels. The systems are made in town, he said.

Las Vegas, NM – On Friday June 21, 2024, several hours of excessive rainfall occurred over the City of Las Vegas and surrounding area, prompting flash flood warnings by the National Weather Service, and soon, many areas in the city began to experience widespread flooding, areas that had never flooded before. Excessive amounts of water containing debris, silt and ash rushed down the Gallinas River with extreme velocity, compromising all of the City’s water reservoirs. It was instantly clear this was a cascading flood event due to the aftermath of the Hermit’s Peak/Calf Canyon Fire which decimated the City’s watershed in 2022.
