Historic Denver Champions Reuse of Zuni Steam Plant
Historic Denver and Colorado Preservation, Inc., have announced their strong support for retaining and reusing Denver’s historic Zuni Steam Plant at 13th and Zuni Street. Xcel Energy has written to the City and County of Denver offering it the first right of refusal to take ownership of the property. Xcel writes: “Should the City and County of Denver decide to not exercise their right to purchase, the Company plans to offer the north parcel for sale for a period of 30 calendar days. Should the property not sell after the 30 days, the Company will move forward with the PUC mandate to demolish.”

Sawa Mediterranean Restaurant & Buffet Puts the Flavors of Sudan in the Spotlight
“A lot of people don’t even know where Sudan is,” says Sara Hamid, a dietitian turned chef who moved to the United States from the northeast African country in 2009. Even fewer, then, are familiar with the vibrant cuisine of her homeland. To remedy that problem in Denver, Hamid launched a catering business in 2019 and in May fulfilled her dream of opening a brick-and-mortar restaurant.
Introducing High School Students to the College of Architecture and Planning Disciplines
This year, the College of Architecture and Planning hosted three, immersive, hands-on summer camps for high school students. Architecture in the City, held over five days in June, introduced local high school students to architecture, landscape architecture, urban design, and urban planning through a collaborative design project. In July, CAP hosted two, weeklong sessions of the ACE Summer Camp in partnership with the national ACE Mentor Program. ACE is an acronym for the “Architecture, Construction, and Engineering” career fields. These overnight summer camps were taught by practicing architects who walked students through an investigation of design, digital fabrication, and sustainable design. Both programs concluded with a final design build project.
